A Timeline of DYSFUNCTION from the Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans fired general manager Ran Carthon after two seasons on Tuesday. Just six months ago, Carthon was considered a foundational figure in the future of the franchise, but after a 3-14 season, controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk decided someone had to pay. Ran Carthon was the one who took the fall.

The Titans are still a young franchise and have had some really successful years, but over the last few seasons, dysfunction has plagued the organization. Let’s go over a timeline of events that have led us to this moment where the Titans have become laughingstocks.

January 22nd, 2022: No.1 Seed Titans lose to the Cincinnati Bengals in Divisional Round

NFL.Com

The 2021 Tennessee Titans were a special team. Despite the absurd number of injuries that ravaged the group, Tennessee posted a 12-5 record and notched the No.1 seed in the AFC. It seemed like the time for the Titans to win the Super Bowl was finally here, but things took a turn for the worst on a chill January Night in Nashville.

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who played an integral role in the Mike Vrabel era teams, tossed three interceptions in the Divisional Round versus the Bengals, and Tennessee lost to Cincinnati by a score of 19-16. The Titans have yet to recover from this game, and January 22nd will always be a day to forget for the Two Tone Blue Nation.

April 28th, 2022: Titans trade WR A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles.Com

This one needs no introduction. The Titans traded a wide receiver who was entering his prime for A FIRST-ROUND PICK. That Round 1 pick became Treylon Burks, yeah that didn’t go well.

Since leaving Tennessee, A.J. Brown has established himself as one of the best playmakers in football and is on a Hall of Fame trajectory.

December 6th, 2022: Titans fire general manager Jon Robinson

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Titans were coming off a blowout loss to A.J. Brown and the Eagles and dropped to 7-5 on the 2022 season. It was just a normal day, and out of nowhere, general manager Jon Robinson was fired. Though Robinson made some atrocious moves in the final years of his tenure as GM, firing a massive part of your leadership in the middle of the season when you have a winning record is complete nonsense. Amy Adams Strunk could’ve waited until the end of the season to fire Robinson. Instead, she created a needless distraction in the middle of December.

November 2022-January 2023: Titans lose 7 straight games to end the 2022 season, miss playoffs.

January 18th, 2023: Titans hire Ran Carthon as general manager

Titans.COM

A little over a month after firing Jon Robinson, the Titans hired San Francisco 49ers Director of Player Personnel Ran Carthon as the Team's New General Manager. Carthon was expected to collaborate with head coach Mike Vrabel and build the Titans back into relevancy after a disappointing 2022 season. Well, we’ll see if it goes well.

September 2023-January 2024: Titans endure second straight losing season, go 6-11.

January 9th, 2024: Titans fire Head Coach Mike Vrabel

ESPN

Vrabel led the Titans to two division titles, a 54-45 record in six seasons, an AFC Championship Game appearance in 2019, and a No.1 seed in the AFC in 2021. The former NFL linebacker also won AP Coach of the Year in 2021. But after two straight losing seasons in 2022 and 2023, Amy Adams-Strunk had enough and fired Vrabel. Other factors came into play, including Vrabel’s desire for more power on the player acquisition front and Strunk’s deteriorating relationship with her head coach.

January 24th, 2024: Titans hire Brian Callahan as Head Coach

Titans.com

The Titans quickly replaced Vrabel with Cincinnati Bengals OC Brian Callahan, who served under Zac Taylor in Cincinnati for five years and coached quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning, Joe Burrow, and Matthew Stafford. Callahan was expected to bring a fresh and modern approach to the Titans and help develop second-year quarterback Will Levis.

March 12th, 2024: Franchise icon Derrick Henry signs with Baltimore Ravens

BAL

Letting Henry walk in free agency was the right thing to do, but it is still a pivotal moment in this timeline. The King was the face of the franchise for almost an entire decade and will be enshrined into Canton as a Tennessee Titan one day. Henry is having another dominant season with the Ravens, rushing for over 1,900 yards and 16 touchdowns, and will have a chance to win the Super Bowl.

March 2024-August 2024: Titans spend over $200 million in free agency, hype for a bounce-back season grows.

September 2024-January 2025: Titans suffer a 3-14 season, Will Levis IS NOT THE GUY, panic sets in.

January 7th, 2025: Titans fire general manager Ran Carthon

Carthon wasn’t perfect in two years as Titans GM, but it is clear the former NFL running back was the scapegoat after an abysmal season in 2024. With his firing on Tuesday, Tennessee has now canned three head coaches or general managers in the last 763 days. The Titans will now be handing the keys over to President of Football Operations Chad Brinker, who will be heading the GM search, and Brian Callahan, who will get a second year as head coach.

I hope this timeline illustrates to all of you how horrible and dysfunctional the Tennessee Titans have been over the last few years. Amy Adams Strunk owes the fans and her investors an explanation, but she rarely does interviews and will probably act like nothing happened when the Titans introduce their new “general manager” in a few weeks. PURE INCOMPETENCE
